There is a full write up about twitter and some useful links on the Software for Learning website for teachers starting out.

Might help.

It was certainly a great few days (or, in my case, a few hours!) at ULearn.  On the plane back, I was sitting next to an ex-MP (who shall remain nameless) and we got talking about why you might use Twitter. He couldn't really see the point, although he used Facebook, and was, I recall, saying it was like standing by a fast-flowing river - you could let it pass you by for a few hours, but also dip a toe in every now and again to follow chat or take part yourself. I pop in a couple of times a day (although the iPhone makes it easier to go in more often..!) and it's my go-to site for breaking news, sometimes, in a local area.

You are spot on, Claire, when you point out the use of it for professional learning - I'd say 90+% of it, for me, is sharing information and ideas about education - and maybe a little bit is inane chat (but you need that, too, to build relationships online, I think;-)). At ULearn, there were some amazing 'a-ha' moments with people I'd only ever met on Twitter - and it was like I'd known them for ages.

When I started, I lurked through lots of people's followers to find one's I enjoyed reading (sounds spooky but it's only like being introduced to friends of friends), and also followed people whose conversations I enjoyed. Keyword searches pull out conversations on your favourite topics, too. After a while, it starts to snowball as your professional learning network (or PLN) grows.....

Feel free to browse my friends and followers - see you online;-)

Thanks for that, Claire - I have been catching up on posts and read all about creating my twitter account, but when I set it up there was no one to follow!  now I have somewhere to start, much appreciated.

Morning all,

Over the last couple of weeks (as I finish up as English Facilitator at Team Solutions and get ready to head to Epsom Girls Grammar School as Director of e-learning), I have been delivering a series of workshops around e-learning and using ICTs in the classroom. One idea that seems to be going down well is the idea of using Twitter as a PLN (Personal Learning Network). All this really means is that you create a Twitter account for yourself and simply "follow" people or companies that can keep you updated and deliver you relevant links and readings to your home page.

You don't even have to "tweet" yourself if you don't want to. I have only recently got back into Twitter, and have found that it is really effective as a kind of personal professional development tool that can be completely tailored to my own needs and interests. Below are some of the people and places I have been following:

Considering Twitter as a PLN!

Another good technique is to have looksy at who like-minded educators are following, and poach from their list! You could check out:

Plenty to keep you busy over the holidays.
