At Hagley Community College nearly all our classes are taught in 2 hour
blocks.
While it's a long time for low ability Year 11s to stick out a boring Maths
or English class, some teachers like the opportunity to plan a sequence of
different activities/speeds/discussions towards a block of solid quiet
writing at the end.
The best idea for a great reading program is to have (and identify) teachers
who are really connected with what the kids like (and can read) and make sure
the kids are getting those books read aloud to them (if they aren't switched
on to what fun books can be) or are getting exposed to them and reading them
to themselves. And that the those teachers are helping all the other
teachers get the best books to the right kids. Our librarian got my class
moving with book trailers on the web.

Hi everyone
Our school is looking at changing our break times so we can have a two
hour literacy block in the morning.
I am interested in finding out if there is any research that indicates
that a 2 hour literacy block is beneficial to students or teachers.
I would really appreciate it teachers who have trialled this could let
me know the advantages and disadvantages of having
one 2 hour block for reading and writing.
Thank you

Susan
