We have used Twitter but in a very controlled way. There is a way of setting it up for classes to use but it needs very careful monitoring because students are constantly tempted to follow celebrities. This can work well but does have its drawbacks.

Hi everyone – this thread is interesting – basically the combination of a student portfolio with a school server to make student learning open to parents.

Our school runs a Moodle + Myportfolio (Mahara) mix with our digital classes.  The benefits are that Mahara is great for communication and feedback, but is a very tricky program that students struggle to use effectively. Moodle is great as a source for resources but students struggle to use the interactive/collaborative tools. Both of these can work but require a school-wide system to set it up – after students use Myportfolio in two classes it becomes more manageable.

I have found the same problem with the google solution (do a web search for “Googlio” if you want to read up on it) – there are too many loopholes for students to get stuck in.

One solution that I will try next year is posterous (www.posterous.com) – it is a blogging tool that seems promising, as students can post by sending a simple email to their account, and then other students can share and comment on work as if responding to a blog post. Again, it does have its difficulties, but I think has a lot of potential.

Has anyone else used other online tools for this?

Interesting email. I have been using the Google "stable" - Google docs (now Drive), Google Forms, Google Mail - in our digital classroom. Like you I have experienced varying degrees of success. One of the things I came aware of was it was preferable to get the students and if possible the home on to using Google Chrome as the preferred browser rather than Internet Explorer. Firefox also worked well.

I have been using the Google sites and blogs for my English students and to be honest I've found it a little frustrating.  At this point I'm going to say that I probably need a tutorial or two so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Students and parents are frustrated they can't comment and this was always the ultimate goal.  I arranged school gmail addresses for each student, students chose themes and styles for both the class site and the book blog.  We can't wait to get this right!

Parents receive weekly links to the site where they can read all about what their children are doing, samples of work are displayed, homework sheets are updated as well as a weekly link to the class book blog where students book reviews are posted (can only post these under my name!! Despite access settings allowing students).  The response from parents - a lot of excited emails thanking us for the links.

Hi All,

A plea to the forum for some advice and feedback here. We are currently investigating options for a Learning Management System. We have various people looking into Moodle, Knowledge Net, and Ultranet so I’m NOT asking about those, unless you are desperately passionate about one of them!

My task is to investigate the use of other cloud-based options / alternatives: what you are using for what means, do you have an official school direction etc, what capabilities are you using and what is your feedback. I would appreciate it if anyone with experience in using things like MyPortfolio, Google (sites/groups etc), Wikis, blogs, Microsoft 365 etc could email me. What I am looking at especially is if these systems have been implemented on a school-wide level as the ‘official’ system of choice. If you use any of these systems in conjunction with another LMS I would also be interested in finding out about that.

You can email me off the forum: cfrench AT storans.school.nz

Thanks in anticipation!

Regards,

Charlotte French
