Pasifika Update

Kia orana hard-working educators,

As the days wind down (or up!) towards the end of the year and you start making your teaching plans for 2014, it seems like a good time to send some reminder links to consult while planning your programmes.

The Pasifika Education Plan (PEP) can be accessed via this link:

Remember that the plan is not enough – it needs buy in and unpacking in your schools and classrooms to make it work!

Also, the ERO report – ‘Making Connections for Pacific Learners’ Success, 2013’ is an interesting read and is accessible:

This document is worth a read – particularly where it identifies these key factors for the success of Pacific learners. Do these things happen in your school or classroom?

·         Pacific learners are mentored and have access to learning support
·         Partnerships with parents and communities are promoted to improve the achievement of Pacific learners and ensure sound subject/strategic plans
·         Teachers receive professional development enabling them to engage culturally with Pacific students
·         Pacific students’ performance is monitored and there is a focus on improvement
·         School management set specific targets to improve Pacific learner achievement

(from ‘Making Connections for Pacific Learners Success: November 2013’)

So for those teachers who already know who their 2014 students are, now could be the time to start thinking about what appropriate goals might be and what conversations with the learners themselves might be initiated in the planning process. Secondary teachers might begin to think about how they will work that balance between knowing the individual learners and meeting the curriculum planning deadlines of management.

Please jump on the forum and share your ideas for 2014!
